British Steel is looking to start building the next generation of steelmakers by recruiting 24 apprentices to work at our Scunthorpe headquarters.

The successful applicants will enrol on 3-year training programmes for mechanical and electrical roles.

The positions are in addition to 31 manufacturing trainees who’ve joined the business since December.

British Steel CEO Ron Deelen said: “We’re delighted to be recruiting our first apprentices since the new business was launched and there could not be a better time to be joining us with the significant investments and improvements we’re making.

Many of our employees joined as apprentices, including senior managers and leaders, and have built fantastic careers within the steel industry. Opportunities like these do not come along very often so we’re looking forward to welcoming the next generation of steelworkers into the business.

British Steel’s apprenticeships are ideal for those wanting to continue studying whilst gaining practical experience within the workplace. Apprentices will complete a Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician apprenticeship that will directly relate to the work they’re undertaking. They’ll be rewarded with a progressive salary and benefits package. 

Training will be delivered in partnership with North Lindsey College. The first part of the programme will be spent at our Apprentice Training Centre in Scunthorpe, where the new recruits will be prepared for going out into plant areas. The remainder of the apprenticeship is spent plant-based, working in Steelmaking, Ironmaking, Energy and Infrastructure or in one of our mills, alongside further study in the apprentice centre.
